COMMUNIQUE OF THE MARITIME JOURNALISTS ASSOCIATION OF NIGERIA (MAJAN) AT A ROUNDTABLE TO APPRAISE THE EXECUTIVE ORDER ON “EASE OF DOING BUSINESS” HELD ON THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 17, 2022
OBSERVATION
The roundtable expressed worry that the advent of Covid-19 has changed the world order which has led to dwindling finances , skyrocketed loan charges , reduced purchasing power of consumers and increased unemployment. All these has compelled businesses to embrace technology and adjust to a new order of doing business .
The Maritime Journalists Association of NIgeria (MAJAN) for this reasons held a roundtable on Thursday February 17,2022 to discuss the challenges of doing business and proffer solutions for sustainable business environment and conditions . The roundtable which had as its theme ” Ease of doing business” was held at NAGAFF village , GRA , Apapa , Lagos
It was intended to find a workable and lasting solution to the challenges. The roundtable was attended by the President- General, Maritime workers union of NIgeria ,. Comrade Adewale Adeyanju who was ably represented by the Deputy Secretary General of the union ,Comrade Oniha Erazua. Also in attendance was the President of MAJAN, Alhaji Tunde Umar Daniah and members of the association.
The president General of Maritime Workers Union in his paper presentation identified the challenges of Ease of doing business and proferred lasting solutions.
MWUN ON CHALLENGES OF EASE OF DOING BUSINESS
1. Governments in most economies adopt or maintain regulations that burden entrepreneurs and this limits the entrepreneur’s ability to freely operate a private business.
2. Government policies , procedures dictate prescribed norms which often stifle innovation and impact negatively on vision in business
3. Difficulty in Business registration with Government regulatory agencies such as NIMASA, NPA and the existing bureaucracy has in no doubt been the bane of Ease of Doing Business.
RECOMMENDATIONS
1. The federal Government has been urged to ensure that regulation is used to achieve the goal of freedom to do business , protect individual investments.
2. Government must reduce the cumbersome way of doing business in our ports and find a way to soften their policies in order to make business attractive to investors and foreigners .
3. Government has been urged to reduce the agencies at the ports , remove the bottlenecks on the ports access roads and cargo clearance .
4. Government must build infrastructure and ensure free flow of traffic on the roads and highways
5. Government should consider business reform aimed at boosting Economic development.
CONCLUSION
The President- General of Maritime Workers Union of NIgeria commended MAJAN for organizing the roundtable and urged the Association and the entire mass media to do more in Business reportage.
